Curvy Girls can rock a skirt!

So as a Curvy Girl, my relationships with skirts have been love/hate, to say the least. I love seeing them on other girls, but I have always hated showing off my legs, and sadly, I fed into the myth that Curvies can’t or shouldn’t wear skirts, especially revealing minis or tight skirts.

Well I call bullshit!!! There’s NO REASON why we shouldn’t show of those legs! Miniskirts, A-Lines or even puffy vintage style, we can rock it all!

Sleek and snug will show off those curves :)

Honorary Curvy Girl – Rosario Dawson

“I remember when I was doing “Rent” and I was too thin, and I was doing that on purpose because I’m dying, I’m a HIV+ drug addict. I remember having to eat raw food and doing all this work to make sure I could stay thin… And I remember everyone asking me when I was doing press for the movie, “what did you do to get so thin? You looked great!” and I’m like, “I looked emaciated.” It’s a form of violence in the way that we look at women and how we expect them to look and be, for… what’s sake? Not health, not survival, not enjoyment of life, but just so that you can look ‘pretty’. I’m constantly telling girls all the time, “everything’s airbrushed, everything’s retouched, to the point of just that it’s never even asked, and none of us look like that.

Nancy Upton vs.American Apparel…Nancy wins!

Hey guys,

So because I’ve been different degrees of plus size my entire life, I’ve never purchased anything at American Apparel.  I knew very little about the company except that their ads were a bit…odd.  Very young, half naked girls in weird poses.  It has obviously worked for them because  they seem to be  doing well, even after some negative press about their founder, Dov Charney.

So recently they have decided to jump on the curvy bandwagon and expanding their sizes to a “plus-size” size 12. Yes a 12, you read correctly. And they’ve come up with an interesting marketing ploy to introduce us plussies to the brand, titled The Next Big Thing.

The whole concept was interesting: they were trying to expand the brand to appeal to bigger sizes, which is a good thing, no? But you couldn’t help but notice the underhanded sarcasm of it all.  The contest wording was full of fat girl puns (Booty-ful, XLent, etc.), though they’ve recently (and conveniently) re-worded it to make it sound less offensive.  It just reeked of insincerity, especially once you’re familiar with their history and how Mr. Charney treats women.

But something wonderful happened.  A phenomenal curvy girl named Nancy decided to take matters into her own hands and…well,  see for yourself.

After submitting her pictures and getting votes, she won the contest! There are differing opinions about whether what Nancy did has pushed us Curvies forward or set us back, but I honestly think this is a brave and amazing young woman.  Nancy proves that 1 person ( a plus size woman, no  less) can make a stand against a giant corporation and make some waves.

You can see her article here at the Daily Beast, as well as her Tumblr.  Feel free to comment and let me know what you think.

New Post : My Plus Size Fashion Style

Hey Lovelies!

My fellow blogger La Diva delle Curve  had this great idea and set up some questions to answer so our readers have a better idea of our fashion stylo! Enjoy!

TAG: My plus size fashion style

  • Height: 5’7
  • clothing size: U.S  16-18 or XL-1x
  • shoe size: 9 1/2
  • body shape (apple, pear, hourglass, banana or strawberry?): I’m an hourglass, larger upper arms, small waist, wide hips and thighs
  • favorite clothing item: jeans
  • clothing item you cannot stand: ew I agree on the bottom wide capris
  • favorite accessories: belts, bracelets, big earrings
  • skirt or pants? As much as I say I like both, I tend to wear pants.
  • do you wear jeans? if so what style and cut you prefer? I love jeans, usually dark wash bootcut or skinnys
  • body part I like to enhance: bust and waist
  • body part I try to hide: the tummy and thighs
  • colors I like to wear: Purple and black, and grey.
  • what fashion trend you think you cannot rock for your body type? Low waisted pants and tummy revealing clothes
  • What fashion trend I think I can rock best? I get complimented when I wear dark washed jeans and bright tops.
  • Heels or not? I like wearing heels and love wedges.  I do wear flats to work, ballet style are my favorite
  • Do you wear swimsuit? If so, what’s your favourite style? I usually wear a bikini top and shorts
  • favorite lingerie style? I love vintage style lingerie,  waist cinchers and girdles, those are the most flattering for my body type, but they tend to be pricey
  • my personal style (bohemian, romantic, rock, casual, sporty, retro, classic, any other? or what mix of these?): i’m a rocker/classic/vintage
  • favorite plus size icon: Mia Tyler and Adele
  • favorite plus size model:  Ashley Graham
  • favorite curvy fashion blogger: Girl with Curves
  • Where do you usually shop for clothes most? Online I shop mostly at Torrid.com, or Old Navy and City Chic Online
  • Places where you usually shop for shoes? The clearance rack at DSW or Nordstrom Rack, sometimes Macys when they have a great sale
  • Places where you usually shop for lingerie? Fredericks of Hollywood has a lot of plus size lingerie at great prices.
  • Do you prefer to shop for clothes online or in shops?  I like both, online there is a larger choice for a plus size, but sometimes when you get it, the fit isn’t right, so you learn as you go.
  • when you choose clothes what do you go for mostly, the looks or comfort? Comfort, but not to the point where its a shapeless frock, I make sure the fit still compliments my body.
  • when choosing clothes what do you go for mostly, quality or convenience?  I think that if it’s a passing fad, you can go for convenience.  However, for staple pieces that I intend to keep for years, I go for quality.
  • what sort of relationship do you have with your body and with fashion? It’s a love/hate thing sometimes, but I definitely think that I have found my style and have figured out what compliments my shape.  There are things I wish I could wear that, once on, won’t make me feel good, but then there are times where I bend the rules a bit when a particular item makes me feel happy to wear, and that’s the point really, to feel good in your clothes.

My Curvy Girl Crush…Mia Tyler!

Beautiful, sexy, and just straight-up a badass bitch, Mia Tyler threw the doors wide open and made everyone see her, truly see her and never forget, as a model, on of the first models with a real body!  Recognized worldwide as one of the first plus size models, she brought sexy to a different level!

She began plus-size modeling at age 20 and was represented by Wilhelmina Models and worked for many companies that loved her rock and roll vibe! She also wrote a book,  Creating Myself: How I learned that Beauty Comes in all Shapes, Sizes and Packages, Including Me. as well a a plus size clothing line and managing rock bands.

You can also find her on Twitter!

Honorary Curvy Girl : Emma Stone

“Confidence is the only key. I know a lot of people who aren’t traditionally ‘beautiful’ — not symmetrical or perfect-bodied or perfect-skinned. But none of that matters because all that shines through is their confidence, humor and comfort with themselves. I can’t think of any better representation of beauty than someone who is unafraid to be herself.”

How awesome is Emma Stone? I don’t mind making her an honorary Curvy Girl, honestly for her I’ll make an exception :)
